Wooden Textile Mill Yarn Thread Spools or Bobbins (Set of 2)

Textile mills used these wood spools, also called bobbins, to store spun yarn. Fun fact from Google AI: Manufacturers began using wood for spools around 1820, and some spools could be returned for a deposit and refilled. However, manufacturers stopped making wooden spools in the early 1970s due to cost.

One of the heads of this set is stamped VERMONT 1941. We believe these are made of birch rather than ash, the two most popular kinds of wood for bobbins. The edges or rims are lined by a metal which may be steel or pewter. One side of each have what we believe to be brass fittings, which probably were designed to fit machinery at the end of the Industrial Revolution.

Our mother used these as candlesticks, hence the darkened stains near the ‘mouths’ on one side of the spools. There are several creative ideas online on how to upcycle them.

We have no idea what the age of these are.
