Wood Firkin Sugar Bucket (1900s)

Wood Firkin Sugar Bucket (1900s)

$40.00Price

Firkins are wooden casks or tubs for butter, lard, liquids, and fish according to Wikipedia, firkin originally meaning a quarter of a barrel, an old American measure equal to about 34 liters. The British used the same term as a measure of beer, butter and cheese.

This slated barrel tapers gently inwards to its top. A swinging wooden handle is held in place by wood pegs. Wood bands encircling the slats narrow to points and are secured with old metal ‘staples’, the top band with a couple of nails as well to hold it in place.

Ours appears never used but the wood has a nice patina, as if stained sometime in the last 50 years. It could use a thoughtful cleaning as there is dusk in the cracks and some marks on the exterior which would probably come right out. There are othere signs of wear consistent with its age.

This bucket is believed to date back to the turn of the century, based on online comparables which price similar buckets anywhere from $ 50-2,000!
