Wancharoen Japakang (1939-2006): Sand Painting Chiang Mai 1971

Still mounted on its original canvas, this signed sand painting is by one of northern Thailand’s famous artists, created early in his career. He is well known for much more detailed sand paintings and eventually gained fame working with metals as a sculptor.
 
This piece may represent a Thai textile, although the images on the piece are not traditionally Thai. The artist used blotches of reds, browns, oranges, and gold leaf in addition to dark sand.
 
The work is signed WANCHAROEN CHIANGMAI 71. 
 
There are some smudges and old newspaper stuck to the canvas, but they add character, say we!
