Vintage Oval Basket with Woven Swirls and Loops 4 ½” Tall

This basket is unique if online search is to be believed – we could not find anything with a similar linked-loop style along the sides or swirls in the rattanwork in the base of the basket. We are guessing it may be vintage or antique American, originally with handles attached or ribbons tied, maybe used as a bread basket or picnic basket. The structure is maintained with what we think is coiled wood or reed wrapped with rattan.
 
It has only three of four half loops for handles or ribbons on the rim as shown in photos. There is a section of the linked loops on the four layered decorative sides that is missing. The basket could also use a good clean. It does, however, have a strong structure, with some flexibility, and is interesting to study.
