Vintage Nepali / Tibetan Butter Tea Churner / Chadong (In Aged Condition)

SKU: 5109

The chadong is a traditional part of the butter tea making process in the Himalayas. Boiled brick tea is poured inside, with butter and salt then added for churning, or mixing, after which it is poured into a teapot.

Never used, this was probably purchased in the late 1960s when our parents lived in Nepal and is now showing its age.

It is made of wood with thin brass straps, one of which is missing as shown in photos. It features the original leather carrying strap which is not in good condition. The churner piston is wood with a brass wrapped handle which has a dent as shown in photos. The lid is wood with a four leaf floral pattern in brass around the churner hole and a brass strap that is loose. The interior does not appear to have been used but does have some discoloration.

In summary, ours is not in pristine condition. This is why we have not priced it anywhere near online comparables which start at $ 180 and go up to $ 750.
