Vintage Glass Insulators / Star Embossed Teal Ponies (Set of 3)

The embossed star brand insulators’ origin are a mystery, possibly a simple mark used by many different manufacturers. See https://www.insulators.info/articles/startracks.htm if interested in the history.

 

Recent sales on eBay showed sale prices of $ 12-14 each for the star brand.

 

Another has  the original wire still attached and a chipped base. The third is nicked in side of the dome.

 

Below are measurements (from left to right as shown in photos) and condition:

 

1. H 3 3/8” x Diameter 2 1/4” Condition: Crack visible within near a big chunk missing from the base.

 

2. H 3 1/4” x Diameter 2 1/8” Condition: Irregular base and dome edge, with original wire, coating peeling.

 

3. H 3 3/8” x Diameter 2 1/8” Condition: One notch near the embossed logo and crack visible within.

 

We believe these were made after 1910 as there are no big bubbles inside the casting, only small ones.

 

 

Glass insulators were first produced in the 1850s as a means of fastening wires to electricity poles, glass efficient in reducing electric current loss on early telephone and later telegraph lines. Bubbling and roughness are signs of early molding. Most insulators are from 1875-1930 however, when hundreds of millions were made. Light blue and transparent glass in beehive shapes were the most popular.

 

Our mother placed her collection on the windowsill to reflect the afternoon sun. Others use them as paperweights, bookends, decor, lightbulb holders, etc.
