We cannot verify if this was a tourist souvenir in the 1920s or 1930s or from the late 1960s, or whether it is a verified ‘shard box’. The ‘shard box’ was created after the Cultural Revolution when artisans collected pieces of smashed porcelain and created keepsakes in the form of little trinket boxes. As ours is clearly lined by tin not silver, we are guessing it is not a genuine shard box.

Theere are some natural imperfections in the porcelain – spots visible in photos. The tin casing, which is beautifully decorated with embossed floral patterns, has some sticker residue on the base and some scuff marks on the lower sides, both of which will probably come off easily with a good cleaning. The inside is unused.
