Vintage AC Williams Sad Iron with Removable Handle

Vintage AC Williams Sad Iron with Removable Handle

SKU: 6022
$10.00Price

In need of cleaning, this old ‘sad iron’ has a wood handle and knob that, when lifted, allows the handle to be detached from the metal iron base. The hallmark ‘The A. C. Williams Co’ is on one side of the base, ‘Ravenna Ohio’ on the other, although both are hard to read due to dust and some rust on the base. The No. 2 is on the base under the handle. We did not try to unscrew the base cap to see if there is anything within the base. A mystery for the buyer to explore!

There are some cracks in the wood on the knob and handle as shown in photos, in addition to stains and some rust on the iron, and dirt on the handle, the latter possible to clean.

Sad irons (“sad” is old English for “solid”) were a type of iron made out of a cast iron. They held heat longer than other irons, but most houses would have two so one could be heated over an open fire or stovetop while the other was in use.

We do not recommend this item be used as originally intended. It would be best used as an item of decor, or paperweight…
