A handwritten scrawl underneath the artwork appears to identify this as a Toyokuni ukiyo-e, or woodblock print. Utagawa Toyokini (1769-1825) was the headmaster of the Utagawa School. With students taking his name, he took to using the signature Toyokuni I. We were able to find works online by Toyokuni I, II and III, but nothing to confirm which if any Toyokuni is responsible for this image. Google Translate on the seals in the lower left corner are probably not to be trusted, but they came up only with a very different name ‘carver Komakichi’ which we could not find online. We will leave it to the experts to weigh in on the history of this piece.

The artwork is attached to an old piece of paper which has some discoloration and tape marks, one of which overlaps with the artwork a little bit in the lower right hand corner as shown in photos.

We believe this was purchased by the Burr sisters  or our grandmother Winona Sands in the 1920s or 1930s in Japan.
