A handwritten scrawl in the bottom left corner of the paper backing this print is attached to reads Toyokuni. We believe we have identified it as a work of Toyokuni III (a student in the Utagawa School under the master of the same name), previously known as Utagawa Kunisada (1786-1865), who created this likeness of Edo era kabuki actor Iwamoto Hei-Ya. We were unable to confirm these details online however.

The paper the artwork is printed on is deteriorating, with the lower edge showing signs of old age and a hole on the right side of the artwork. The paper backing is discolored with age.

This belonged to the Burr sisters, who would have bought it in Japan in the 1920s or 1930s. Their name is both underneath the artwork on the paper it is attached to, and on the back of the paper backing.
