TOTI 019 Silk Cambodian Pidan (Buddhist Altar Cloth) (Set of 2)

SKU: TOTI 019
$100.00Price

Temples, elephants, guardian lions, and what we think are chickens decorate these colorful mural-like pieces, which are a bit brighter than captured in photos.

An expert identified these as Cambodian* canopy panels (pidan) to be used in a temple over or behind the Buddha figure.  She said the ikat has a good  range of detail and curved designs, but these are an unsual shape, as they are supposed to be long rectangles.  "A lot of work went into doing the ikat tying and dying for these colors and the complex motifs," she said, explaining that even if these are not that old (given the stiffness of  the cloth, they are more recent), they are still worth about $ 150-200 each.

*Probably purchased in Thailand in Surin near Cambodia.

We have two identical pieces.  Condition is good but, on one of the pieces, there are some natural imperfections and loose threads plus an area of discoloration and one hole we spotted as shown in photos.

Note: Price is for the set of two matching pieces.

Material is believed to be silk.
