Tibetan Brass/Tin Butter Tea Strainer and Cup (Set of 2 Pieces)

Tibetan Brass/Tin Butter Tea Strainer and Cup (Set of 2 Pieces)

$20.00Price

This two piece set appears to be made of a thinner brass cup with tin lining, and heavier brass handles possible attached with copper pegs. The strainer with stepped bowl and domed base has a pattern etched into the handle, but the end is either broken or unfinished. The cup has a flat long tongue-like handle with a hook and loop on the end to allow for hanging. The weight of the handle makes it impossible for the cup to sit on its relatively flat base.

According to the Horniman Museum in London, Tibetans developed their own way of preparing tea, adding extra nutrition using bricks of tea. Called ‘bo-jha’ or ‘po cha’ (butter tea to foreigners), chunks of tea are broken off the brick, toasted over a fire to destroy any mold or insects, then boiled in water, before being passed through a strainer. Yak milk, yak butter, and salt would be added after then the mixture churned with a stick.

Both hand-hammered pieces are tarnished and in need of cleaning. The strainer has some dents in the cup rim. The cup has some natural irregularities on the base and below the handle.

We believe these were bought by our mother during the 18 months she lived in Kathmandu in 1966-1967.
