TI 005 Iket Kepala Headcloth 1/2

SKU: TI S005
$20.00Price

Experts identified this as a man's 'iket kepala' headcloth from Java, the Garuda wings emanating from the voided diamond-shaped center a principal element, and the floral imagery suggesting it may be or have been made for the market in Jamba where strict Muslim culture led to more floral patterns (images of animals and figures not worn).

We believe this was purchased by the Burr sisters in the 1920s or 1930s during their travels.

This one of two iket kepala in our collection is much cheaper as it is more damaged than the other. It has a few spots and two small stains plus a rather large vase mark on the top (was probably used as a tablecloth for a small table by our grandmother - the family bought textiles to use, not just to collect). See photos for imperfections.

You can read more about the headcloths from the Art Institute Chicago. (Click here.)

Material is believed to be cotton, plain weave with hand-drawn wax resist dyed (batik tulis) with natural dyes.
