Silver Shaving Mug (1900, Victorian or Edwardian)

Hallmarks on this shaving mug, also known as a scuttle, indicate the mug was made in Birmingham (as evidenced by the anchor stamp) and of sterling 0.925 (per the lion passant stamp). The stamp with the letter ‘a’ is the hallmark for items made between July 1900 and June 1901. The other stamps include what we believe is a sovereign head duty mark (impossible to tell if it was for Queen Victoria who ruled until early 1901 or King Edward VII), and the letter M in a font we could not match to any maker mark directories online. We could not find any reference for the initial 53 mark.
 
How to use the shaving mug: Pour hot or boiling water in the ‘bucket’ section on the bottom and rest a soap ‘puck’ or cream in the cup above. Dip a shaving brush into the water and then use it to whip up a warm lather before applying the shaving solution to your face.
 
This shaving mug has some imperfections – dents and scratches – and does need a more professional polishing that covers all nooks and crannies. (We are not professionals!) See photos for more details.
