Rare Balinese Lontar Palm Leaf Offering Bowls / Covers (Set of 2)

$200.00Price

These appear to be very rare and probably antique decorated palm leaf (lontar) bowls used by the Hindu community in Bali to cover temple offerings. Most we found online have intricate lace-like beading, but obviously these do not.

We suggest they may be antique as these are exactly the type of souvenirs our great grand aunts, the Burr sisters, would have picked up during their travels to Indonesia in the 1920s or 1930s.

We have read that the decorative panels are made of fabric scraps with common colored thread and mica, a mirror like mineral. Both feature sun patterns surrounded by Xs and intricate stitching. The bodies of the baskets are also finely stitched as shown in photos. One has a sticker in the base with a code 990T25 which is of no meaning to us.

Both appear to have some foxing or spotting in the inner basket. Both have some loose threads, one a couple of scratches on the exterior. We still believe they are stunning examples of human creativity, regardless of any imperfections, natural or otherwise.
