Nepali Handmade Miniature Replica of Pashupatinath Temple (Hindu)

SKU: 4833
$20.00Price

The Pashupatinath Temple is regarded as one of the oldest Hindu temples in Kathmandu, Nepal, and recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is a Hindu pilgrimage site, dedicated to Pashupati, a form of Shiva. For architecture fans, this is built in the Nepali ‘pagoda style’.

The pinnacle atop our replica is unfortunately broken, the sharp end missing, but the break is not so obvious until you observe what a real one looks like... There is also a piece of the roof broken off in the bck, and one decorative roof corner missing in the back. And  there may be some water stains on the front. See photos.

You can however see the statue of the large bull Nandi in front of the entrance (IRL he is plated in bronze) and if you look inside, you will see a small wood figure meant to represent the deity in the center of the real temple. The real one is reportedly of black stone, 6 feet high and in circumference. The bells on the eaves hang from small wire hooks, allowing them to move when the piece is moved.

All parts appear to be made of wood including the circular feet while, while appearing of identical height, are not exactly balanced for some reason.

A curious detail of this piece is that the bottom was signed by five women from Sweden, Norway and Israel... as we don’t know the history of how our family came into possession of this piece, the reason for this will remain a mystery.

Date of origin unknown. Probably late 1960s-1980s.

Comparables of the same size sell for $ 36 newly made on Handicraftseller.com at the time of researching this item. Larger ones go for much more there and on etsy and ebay.
