Small 9" Antique Brass Bed Warmer / Warming Pan with Lid

The small size of this bed warmer suggests it was either a ‘salesman sample’ as some describe them on eBay, or maybe for a baby’s bed. Hot embers were put in the pan or sand heated over a fire inside, and then the device was moved up and down under covers to heat the sheets. A ring on the top of the turned wood handle made it possible to hang on the wall or near the fireplace when not in use.
 
Some descriptions said similar ones were also used to melt wax for wax seals. 
 
We believe this dates to at least the early 1900s. There is no branding or maker’s mark. The container is believed to be brass, as most of this size we found online were, although someone thought it might be copper which was also commonly used for bed warmers. 
 
We did not polish it, leaving it with aged patina for a buyer to clean if so desired. There is a chip in the wood handle (see photos). 
 
For safety reasons, we do not recommend it be used as anything other than a decorative addition to your home.
