Identified online as a Makah or Nuu-chah-nulth basket from the indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest and Vancouver Island. If we are correct, the finely woven basket was created using beargrass and or slough grass in a closed wrapped twining technique, with the inner bark of red cedar as visible when the lid is lifted. Colors were achieved with natural dyes, the original saturation visible inside. Estimated age of this piece would be the early 1900s, so probably purchased by the Burr sisters.

In excellent condition with minor natural imperfections.
