Karen Bamboo and Lacquer Betel Nut Boxes (Set of 2)
The natural soil-based pigment and ‘zigzag’ pattern of these betel nut boxes identify them as originating with the Karen hill tribe people who live on the Thai/Burma border. Both have ‘hat box’ like lids that fit snugly atop high-sided containers made of bamboo strips covered in dark lacquer. The larger one, which appears significantly older and finely crafted, includes two ‘serving trays’ on which ingredients were presented for guests to select when mixing betel nut chew, a mild stimulant similar to tobacco once used widely in Southeast Asia. Both have an aged patina on the lacquerwork.
