Indian Miniatures: Modes of Transport (Set of 2) (6 ¼” x 5.5”)

$10.00Price

These look like cut outs pasted atop plain paper, but they could also be rare gouache on mica paintings, the artwork sections sparkling a bit, mica a transparent mineral found in south India.

The Victoria & Albert Museum has a set of forty paintings illustrating modes of transport ca. 1870 that very much resemble these two miniatures as shown in photos. We also found at least one pair on ebay. As we cannot verify it,however, we will assume these are tourist reproductions and let you find out if we were wrong!

These were probably acquired by the Burr sisters or our grandmother during a trip to India in the 1930s.

The glass is reflective, and the frames are gold color painted wood. There are some imperfections under the glass which we could not capture with the camera. They are not noticeable unless looking very close, however.

H 6 1/4” x L 5 ½” x D 5/8”
