This image in the Mughal style of art is believed to be from the Ragamala, a loved-themed set of paintings that represent musical notes, dating back to the Rajput kingdom in the 18th century. A raja is a male protagonist associated with a musical mode or set of scales, ragini the female mode. Each image and associated sound are linked to seasons and times of day. Ragamalas were commissioned in loose leaf folios of 36-42 pages for perusal by those in inner court cirles.

Most likely inherited from the Burr sisters, who would have had it framed in the 1920s-1930s.

Not captured in the photos is the shimmer of gold paint on the utensils and dressing table.

There is minor deterioration of the border, and a speck of something near the bottom edge as shown in photos. Glass is reflective. Frame is light wood painted gold with some imperfections.

Unofficial appraisal: $ 400-500 at auction.
