Lalita Ragini is an image in the Mughal style of art from the Ragamala series. It depicts a man looking back at his sleeping lover, or wife, on her day bed as he departs at dawn after a night of passion. The loved-themed Ragamala is a set of paintings that represent musical notes, dating back to the Rajput kingdom in the 18th century. A raja is a male protagonist associated with a certain musical mode or set of scales, ragini the female mode. Each image and associated sound are linked to seasons and times of day. Ragamalas were commissioned in loose leaf folios of 36-42 pages, of which this image was a classic one.

Most likely inherited from the Burr sisters, who would have had it framed in the 1920s-1930s.

Not captured in the photos is the shimmer of gold paint on the sun, clothing, drinks tray, duck, and fish.

There is some peeling and deterioration of the edges of the paper (especially along the bottom) as shown in photos. Glass is reflective. Frame is light wood painted gold.

Unofficial appraisal: $ 400-500 at auction.
