Indian Kalamkari Painting: Prince Rama Wedding Blessing (18 5/8” x 23 ¾”)

$30.00Price

This hand painted cotton using natural dyes depicts a scene from the Ramayana in which King Dasaratha’s son Rama was able to string a bow to win the hand of King Janaka's daughter Sita for marriage. The text names both and includes wishes of good fortune on his wedding. (Credit to Google Translate for being able to translate from Telegu, the language used in Andhra Pradesh, southern India.)

Kalamkari paintings such as this were used for temple teachings.

The cloth is mounted on a dark wood frame. The artwork is old and has a few holes as shown in photos.

On the back is a business card from Art’s Framing, meaning this was framed in Bangkok, Thailand sometime between 1969 and 1987. Otherwise, we do not know when or how our mother came into possession of this piece.

H 18 5/8” x L 3 ¾” x D 1 5/8”
