Ila Scholla (1933-2012): Pla Jaramet (23 7/8” x 18”)

$350.00Price

This unique piece features two fish (pla jaramet in Thai) printed on handmade paper which was then put on top of this orange painted strip-wrapped wood frame. There appears to be a glaze or finish atop the artwork to protect it.

Pla Jaramet is the Thai name for the red bellied pacu (P. Brachypomus).

We are doing more research to determine who the artist is as we have two pieces with similar construction and are unable to decipher the signature on this one which is titled ‘Pla Jaramet’ as shown in photos. We believe this was created in Bangkok, Thailand, by a member of Nancy’s artists collective, the Inkie Fingers, in the mid-1980s.

This unique piece features two fish (pla jaramet in Thai) printed on handmade paper which was then put on top of hand-dyed orange paper strips which had been wrapped atop the wood frame, front and back. Based on other work by Ila Scholla online, we believe the artwork was then coated with an alcohol proof finish to be heat resistant and allow it to be wiped clean with a damp cloth.

Ila Scholla was a famous artist with her own studio in Bangkok in the 1980s, a good friend and collaborator of our mother Nancy Chandler. She was probably a member of Nancy’s artists collective, the Inkie Fingers, in the mid-1980s. She seems to have had a real love for fishes, her later work being striking hand-dyed handmade paper works of fish, although, like Nancy, she dabbled in many different mediums.
