Ila Scholla (1933-2012): Fishes (23 3/4" Square)

Ila Scholla (1933-2012): Fishes (23 3/4" Square)

$350.00Price

We believe this distinctive piece is by Ila Scholla, a Bangkok based artist of some repute in the 1980s whose signature was using hand-dyed paper strips to coat her works, back and front. We have another piece with similar style and subject matter which she did sign. On this particular piece, however, we could not find her signature, though it may be there…

Based on other work by Ila Scholla online, we believe the artwork was coated with an alcohol proof finish to be heat resistant and allow it to be wiped clean with a damp cloth.

Ila Scholla was a famous artist with her own studio in Bangkok in the 1980s, a good friend and collaborator of our mother Nancy Chandler. She was probably a member of Nancy’s artists collective, the Inkie Fingers, in the mid-1980s. She seems to have had a real love for fishes, her later work being striking hand-dyed handmade paper works of fish, although, like Nancy, she dabbled in many different mediums.

As mentioned above, we found no title or signature on the piece. There are also a few scuff marks as shown in photos.
