This woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) features a woman with umbrella walking through the snow at Shinobazu Pond in Ueno. It is the first in a set of three according to the MFA Boston which also confirmed its creation around 1848-1849.

The artwork is taped on its top side to a large piece pf paper. Lift the artwork and you will find a ‘guaranteed genuine’ statement and seal, as shown in photos, stating this is GENUINE HIROSHIGE 1818-1858.

Unfortunately, the piece has not only experienced some water damage above the artwork, and the paper it is attached to has damage on the sides as shown in photos, but our late uncle Pete obviously considered it drawing paper when he was a little boy. (You are allowed to face palm when looking at his artwork on the back in photos.)

On the upside, the artwork itself appears untouched by the damage surrounding it.
