The official title of this image originally by Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) is the Sanno Festival Procession at Kojimachi I-Chome, no. 51 of the One Hundred Famous Views of Edo series. This wood block print is in blues and faded red, rather than the bright colors usually associated with the original dating back to 1856.

We assume this was purchased in the 1920s or 1930s during a visit to Japan by the Burr sisters, but it is possible it was bought by our grandparents in the 1960s given the date on the back as mentioned below.

We have been advised experts need to take it out of the frame to determine if it has been trimmed.

The artwork is in reflective glass, which has a crack in the lower left corner and two glass chips under the glass in the middle of the bottom section of the cream mat, as shown in photos. The frame is black wood with minor nicks. On the back of the frame is the date 8-9-63, which we believe was the last date it was framed, the meaning of the no. 356 underneath unknown.
