The official title of this image originally by Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) is Utsu Hill at Okabe according to the Met Museum. It was created around 1834. The paper backing – to which it is mounted only along the top edge – states it is HIROSHIGE 1858, and a note under the artwork reads # 21 Okabe Tokaido series. We did check the Fifty-Three Stations of the Tokaido series, however, and while # 21 is of Okabe, it is a different image in some listings, but Wikipedia does indeed show it as # 22 in the series (the 21st station on the route).

We assume this was purchased in the 1920s or 1930s during a visit to Japan by the Burr sisters.

There is foxing, or spotting, on the print, and discoloration along the edges.
