The official title of this image originally by Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) is Moon Pine, Ueno, no. 89 of the One Hundred Famous Views of Edo series. This wood block print is believed to have been designed in 1856.

We assume this was purchased in the 1920s or 1930s during a visit to Japan by the Burr sisters, but it is possible it was bought by our grandparents in the 1960s. On the back of the frame are the handwritten words “HIROSHIGE 1797-1858 FROM 100 SERIES OF EDO (TOKYO) CIRCA 1806-1858.”

We have been advised experts need to take it out of the frame to determine if it has been trimmed.

The artwork is in reflective glass with a white cream matfor the moment. The dark stained frame is wood with minor nicks.
