The official title of this image originally by Utagawa Hiroshige ((1797-1858) is Station Maisaka ‘View of Imagiri’, no. 31 in The Fifty-Three Stations of the Tokaido’ series. It shows sailboats and fishing boats from the port at Imagiri, with Mt Fuji in the far left background.

This wood block print is in blues and red, similar to the original print which dates to 1833-1835.

We assume this was purchased in the 1920s or 1930s during a visit to Japan by the Burr sisters, but it is possible it was bought by our grandparents in the 1960s given the date on the back as mentioned below.

We have been advised experts need to take it out of the frame to determine if it has been trimmed, and if acid-free paper was used or if there has been leeching, especially given the the foxing, or spotting,on the print. It may also have a crease from prior folding.

The artwork has a cream mat, which has a water stain on the bottom, and is in reflective glass, as shown in photos. The frame is black wood with minor nicks. On the back of the frame is the date 8-10-63, which we believe was the last date it was framed, with 12oo written beneath which may have been the price due for framing. A sticker is in the bottom right hand corner of the back, which appears to be from a Japanese shop.
