Himalayan Five-Headed Snake Goddess Butter Churner / Wall Hanging

SKU: 5059
$90.00Price

We have been told this may be part of a Himalayan  butter churner, featuring an image of a Himalayan goddess with five headed snake above her. We have been unable to find anything online similar, except one listing that suggested this might be a shaman’s temple god which was selling for $ 150 on ebay.

The hand carved wood is primitive, with what appears to be a 5-headed naga not only overhead (symbolism: protecting the diety, also representing transformation), but also on her lap. The hole created by the coils of the snake looks like it probably fit a pole, the piece used as possibly a handle for easier turning during churning. There is also a notch behind the goddess’ head.

In addition to the natural imperfections of a hand-carved piece of art, there is some white residue spots on one side and the bottom. There is also a cloth hanging sticker on the back.

The sticker suggests this belonged to our grandmother, who loved reimagining how to display her odd travel finds. This would mean she may have bought it in India in the 1930s.
