We believe these are ceremonial urns, or ‘pooja kalash’ holy water pots, used in offerings both at home and at temples, sometimes with mango leaves and coconuts on top. They represent abundance and fertility. They may also be filled with coins, gems, gold, grains.

Some online are pitched as censors for incense, others suggest they be used as garden pots or general decor, one even for use in witchcraft!

Ours comes with the original three-legged stand/pedestal.  As shown in pictures, the lion heads are part of the brass handiwork, not attachments added later.

The brass on ours is tarnished, the base needs cleaning, and there is residue for prior polishing attempts in the crevices of the lion faces on either side. Otherwise, this item appears to be in great condition.

We are not sure if this dates back to our mother’s visit to India in 1969 or even earlier when our great grand aunts went there in the 1920s or 1930s.
