Hand Painted Thai Traditional Art: Phra Malai (11 5/8” x 8.5”)

Hand Painted Thai Traditional Art: Phra Malai (11 5/8” x 8.5”)

$75.00Price

This old hand painted temple artwork, believed to be from a manuscript, or ‘teaching panel’, is most delicate. The beautiful graphics include petals falling from the sky and the use of gold leaf or paint for details.

We believe this panel depicts Phra Malai, a Buddhist monk in the Ramakien (Thailand’s version of the Ramayana) who travelled to hell and heaven, returning to share lessons learned.

There is a crease through the middle from prior folding and the panel shows signs of much use in the past with cracks and peeling. There are also moisture marks and what appear to be drops of candlewax in the upper left corner as shown in photos.

The image is not matted, the glass is reflective, and the gold painted wood frame has some smudges but is in quite good condition.

Priced by appraiser.

H 11 5/8” x L 8 ½” x D ½”

The artwork fills the frame.
