While this print has the name Tamazono on the rear side of the paper backing, we found this artwork only in two places online. The official Ukido-e (Woodblock Print) Search engine online identifies the artist as Gyokuen, the official title as Kurodanni Konkai Komyoji Temple, and establishes the date of creation as 1860. Click on Gyokuen and Tamayuan comes up. We also found Tamazono mentioned in connection with the name Gyokuen. But no other references. We will leave it to the experts to explain…

The artwork has deteriorated with age, some tears on the upper left edge and a section missing on the lower right side. There is also a hole on the mark in the lower left corner. And some discoloration around the edges.

This piece belonged to the Burr sisters, the name Burr on the paper backing underneath the artwork and M Burr on the backside of the paper backing. They would have purchased this in the 1920s or 1930s during a visit to Japan.
