Jesús Reyes Ferreira, better known as Chucho Reyes, was a Mexican antiques vendor who started painting the crepe paper he wrapped sales in, but doing so with such style people came seeking out just his artwork. A self-taught artist, most of his work was created after he moved from Guadalajara to Mexico City at age 58. His works were shown worldwide and, while some dismissed his style as ‘folk art’, many famous artists sought him out.
He is best known for the use of bold colors using mixed oils, paints and gouaches.
We believe our grandparents, Maurice and Winona Sands, would have bought this during one of their visits to Mexico sometime between 1950-1980.
This piece is just one of many roosters he created, but the colors are more striking than many we found online and the work larger than many sold at auction before. His signature is in the lower right corner. The artwork has a brown-gray mat.The frame is black wood, with some tape marks on all four sides. Otherwise it is in very good condition.
Online auctions show his work going for anywhere from $ 2,500-12,500.
