Antique Chinese Emerald Green and Dark Blue Octagonal Bowls (1800s)

SKU: 5505
$500.00Price

Our appraiser dated these back to the 1880s at the latest, noting that the dark blue exterior was unusual. We were unable to find anything similar online so we are going with just a bit less her recommended pricing.

The bowls are beautiful. The exteriors are a dark blue glaze, with two repeated Chinese letters, one in the shape of a turtle which symbolizes longevity, the other with two people which means happiness according to a friend in China, who added it is usually associated with weddings.

Inside, the bowls are glazed an emerald green, with natural pockmarks and crackling on the sides leading down into a dark green pool at the bottom of the bowl. In sunlight, you can also see some light blue wisps and a touch of rusty red in the glaze.

The pedestal base has a crackled cream glaze, the rim unglazed, presumably due to stacking in the kiln.

Both were well loved, the bottom of the bowls scratched as shown in photos.

We believe they were purchased in China in the 1930s by the Burr sisters or our grandmother. We found no comparables online. Please let us know if you do.
