This rare piece includes the red line signature and seal of the artist, Charles William Bartlett, an English printmaker and painter who had 21 woodblock prints published by Shozaburo Watanabe in 1916 when he visited Japan.

The print fills the frame, which has a few chips along the upper edge. On the back is written ‘Gift of Martha Gerbode’ in our mother’s handwriting.  We are not sure what the 3260 B scrawled on the back meant.

(Martha Alexander Gerbode – 1909-1971 - was a descendent of the Alexander missionary family in Hawaii, relatives on our father’s side. Her legacy is the Gerbode Foundation supporting many worthy causes, including conservation. During her lifetime, she is said to have said she only wanted to take on the projects no one else would fund. She is responsible for environmental protection projects in Hawaii and the San Francisco Bay Area.)
