Chinese Ceramic Bowl Pieces (Set of 2)

SKU: AA 013
$30.00Price

The larger orphan flatware piece is crackled glaze, with images around the bowl outside showing a man approaching a temple, another on a traditional boat with sail, an island, clouds and plants. Inside a man is seated in a boat that appears to be made from a large leaf...

Experts describe this as a curious piece. The figures look Chinese but the painting is similar to that used in Blue d' Hue which was Chinese export porcelain for the Vietnamese market in the then-capital of Hue in the 18th and 19th centuries. Gray granules on the bottom and darker chocolate iron stains indicate it was recovered from a shipwreck or was castaway in rich sediment in fresh water. There is no pitting on the glaze from salt water, but there is pitting inside from where gases escaped during firing.

The smaller piece, which has a shop mark on the bottom in what we believe to be Chinese, appears to have an image of a dragon or other mythical creature inside.  You can see three talons in two places, meaning it was not an imperial piece (which show five talons).

Provenance of both is unknown although our great grand aunts travelled through China in the 1930s...
