Betel Nut Box with Hand Painted Geometric Designs

We believe this to be an antique betel nut box given its age and condition, but we have no idea where it is from, or how old it is exactly, and found no comparables online. The layout is Thai style but the geometric designs on the sides are unfamiliar motifs.

It was built with wood pegs and has one pattern lining all four sides of the base, but three different patterns on the upper portion and only on three sides as if unfinished. A closer look revealed nails in the fourth panel, suggesting the original side fell off and it was replaced at a later date with a plain slab of wood.

The idiosycracy of the fourth panel suggests this might be something our grandmother bought in the 1970s when visiting Thailand, or in her youth when she went to Indonesia in the 1930s with her great aunts. She had a flair for loving things with character.

It is showing its age, and is a little bit wobbly, with on side higher than the other. The side panels are also a little bit loose.

Our mother Nancy used this as a catch-all box for keys, notes, membership cards, etc.
