Antique Wood Tea Caddy with Key (Well-Loved)

Antique Wood Tea Caddy with Key (Well-Loved)

SKU: 5051
$20.00Price

With two compartments for tea to keep the once very expensive loose tea safe and dry, with key to restrict access. Could be repurposed as a treasure box...

Online, you can find similar vintage tea caddies for hundreds of dollars, but ours was well-loved. The trim on the outside is missing on three sides. One of the domed lids inside is chipped. There are scratches and marks inside and out.

The original floral pattern embossed oil cloth inside the lid is scratched and has some stains. In the two tea twin compartments within are the peeling remnants of a foil lining. The inlaid bone or oyster shell keyhole escutcheon has a scratch or discoloration line across it. We do not know the material of the knobs atop the domed lids within, but one is a bit too easy to unscrew and both knobs are surrounded by worn wood. See photos.

On the upside, we found an old key for the brass front lock that works. We are not sure it is the original key and it does take a little wiggling to reopen the box once locked.

A note inside says it belonged to the Burrs meaning it is at least as old as the 1920s. Comparables online date back to the early 1800s so we are guessing they had it in the family for some time.

We believe it is made of rosewood as that is what it most resembles in online research.
