Antique Pewter Whale Oil Lamp with Maker’s Mark (1800s)

This is believed to date back to the mid-1800s when whale oil lamps were popular for longer lasting light, only to be replaced by candles in the later 1800s. We believe it to be of German origin but we could be wrong.

Whale oil or other fuel would be poured in the cup atop with a wound piece of cloth or other ‘wick’ inserted through the spout. The lid and wick spout kept the oil from leaking and protected it from insects and other debris. They can be used today with olive oil or vegetable oil.

The maker’s mark which is stamped deep inside the stem under the base appears to feature a figure with wings. We were unable to find any such makers marks online but pewter maker marks were not regulated. A buyer may be interested in doing further research. (Who knew the UK and US both have pewter collector clubs and thick manuals on pewter marks? Not us!)

Ours includes two links of a non-existent chain probably once used to hang the lamp. The handle, cup, and cup lid hinge are in good condition but the top side of the spout where it connects to the cup appears cracked. We did not test to see if it can hold liquid.

The piece has a very strong patina. We assume it is hiding scratches and other marks consistent with its age. See photos.

Comparables online include an exact copy in worse condition for $ 75, and another selling for $ 110.
