Antique Pewter ½ Gill Alcohol Measuring Cup

SKU: 5185

The gill (pronounced jill) was an imperial measuring cup, or tankard, from the 1800s. A ½ gill is late Victorian measure dating to the turn of the last century. Based on our research, it would be equal to about 4 tablespoons in US measurements and gill measures were used primarily for alcohol or spirits in pubs and bars.

This one has an unknown crown logo on the front, ‘1/2 GILL’ stamped to the left of the logo, and a unidentifiable verification mark struck in the outside rim of the cup featuring a star and possibly a letter or two nearby. There is no date stamp or company logo.

The base and mouth have uneven edges but the cup stands balanced.
