Antique Indonesian Garuda Woodcarving (1920s or 1930s)

SKU: 4857
$20.00Price

This dark wood hand-carved piece features the stern faced Garuda, half human, half bird, a symbol of Indonesia.

From Wikipedia: Garuda appear in many traditions and stories, especially in Java and Bali. In many stories Garuda symbolises the virtue of knowledge, power, bravery, loyalty, and discipline. As the vehicle of Vishnu, Garuda also bears the attributes of Vishnu, which symbolize preservation of cosmic order.

We believe the Burr sisters purchased this piece during their travels in the 1920s or 1930s. It is in good condition despite its age, although it appears to be missing some of its wings on the right side, the tips of feathers over its head, and a small section of the nose. It still strikes an imposing silhouette, however.

We did not find many comparables online, but we did find similar ones with Vishnu riding Garuda selling for $ 120 and up.
