Indonesian Betel Sirih Leaf Holder Brass (Vase, Candleholder, Pen Holder)

This simple brass piece is believed to be from Java, purchased by the Burr sisters in the 1920s or 1930s. It is a bit smaller than others found online, one of which had a hole in the bottom probably used for draining moisture. Ours and one other we found both have metal ‘stoppers’ welded to the bottom. 
 
The center cavity suggested it was likely used as a candleholder by the Burrs, but we have since cleaned it as much as possible. The exterior has some scratches and nicks, as well as two ‘repaired’ areas as shown in photos. 
 
The base is even and weighted enough to allow it to stand without worry if used as a small vase or pen holder. 
 
It may need some polishing when you receive it.
