Antique Indian Brass Chapati Bread or Food Storage Box

Antique Indian Brass Chapati Bread or Food Storage Box

SKU: AA 015
$60.00Price

While not the common shape of chapati bowls, this piece may indeed be one. If not, we are quite sure it served as a food storage container.

'Chapati boxes' were designed to keep traditional Indian wheat bread warm. The same would work for other food items.

This brass food storage jar with lid dates back to 1920s or 1930s when our great grand aunts visited India. We believe it was meant to be strapped shut for portability, used as a lunchbox of sorts. (Most chapati boxes online have locks.)

The bowl is hand hammered with cramp seams attaching the domed bottom and side of the bowl, as shown in photos. The way the small handle atop the lid is attached with flattened hinges within the lid is interesting.

While in need of polishing, this piece has a beautiful glow. There are some scratches and a spot of rust in the base of the bowl.
