Antique German Pewter Beer Steins (Set of 2)

These heavy beer steins, or barrel steins, were clearly well-loved in their time. Believed to date back to the mid-1800s, they are both branded inside their lids although the stamps are hard to read. Both are marked PROBZINN, confirmed by a steinmaster as an indication of the quality of pewter and also indicative – along with the shape of the stein and the shape and size of the hinge and thumblift – of the mid-1800s.
 
The larger one features two identical stamps inside the lid featuring possibly an apple with leafy stem and we can only make out some letters around the border, which we think read …  OEEFHKUNT25 (ZS?) … ST30… PILSEN.
 
The smaller one has two identical coat of arm stamps with only the letters UNT21 (ZI) visible, the number 1083 under each. This one also has two letters on the lid, a backwards N* followed by P as shown in photos. The smaller one also has a more interesting design on the bottom of the handle.
 
* The backwards N is Cyrillic, which is also used in the Russian, Serbian, Ukrainian, Bulgarian, Belarusian, Czech, Kazakh, Kirghiz, and Macedonian languages.
 
Imperfections: The larger one has a dent in the upper lid and a crack on the inside of the lid near the joint. The smaller one has a dent in the base. Both have scratches. Both lids do not fit perfectly over the mouth of the tankards. Both are discolored, possibly rusted, inside. Both need polishing and cleaning, which we have left to a buyer to do as we know some people get a real kick out of doing such themselves.

Smaller tankard: H 6 ¾” x L 4 ½” x W 3 ¼”, 1 lb 9.5 oz
