Antique Emerald Green Glazed Stoneware Ceramic Candlestick Set

Antique Emerald Green Glazed Stoneware Ceramic Candlestick Set

SKU: AC 001
$500.00Price

This beautiful set reflects the love of handmade colored ceramics that runs through our mother’s side of the family.

Each comes with a metal (possibly brass) candle cup with metal stake that never perfectly fit into the holes on the top of each ceramic piece. This is why you see some with tape to ensure a snugger fit.

The top of two candlesticks have chips which we have since learned may be natural imperfections along with the cracks that are part of the glazing process.

Origin is unknown. These were appraised at $ 125 each. We’ve since done more research and believe they might be Chinese in origin from the turn of the past century, part of the Burr sisters’ collection. The glaze color and style most matches that of Qing dynasty (1800s) ‘shiwan’ oil lamps converted into candlesticks with an extra base added. Shiwan oil lamps usually sat on the base of the middle ‘petticoat’ which are raised off the ground on our collection. See this example on Chairish which has the same hole in the top of the holder: https://www.chairish.com/product/12569645/antique-green-glaze-ceramic-qing-dynasty-candlestick. We are seeking a more detailed assessment.

The only other similar items were Moroccan tamegroute but the color and glazing appear different and we know of no family members that have been to Morocco.

Note: We have found it hard to capture the true color of these pieces. Please be aware that the shades might be a wee bit different on delivery. (More beautiful, we promise.)
