Antique Chinese Illustrated Hide and Wood Case with Lacquer Art

Antique Chinese Illustrated Hide and Wood Case with Lacquer Art

$180.00Price

Believed to date back to the mid to late 1800s, this case features initially hard-to-see illustrations on the weathered exterior, lacquered art inside the lid, and brass hardware. The signature seals of possibly two artisans is also visible, one signature on the latch and one inside the base of the suitcase. The lacquer art and hide covering the case are peeling and cracking, and it is not in pristine condition, but it is still a characterful and beautiful piece, one of our favorites.

We believe it was purchased by the Burr sisters in the 1920s or 1930s when they travelled to ‘The Orient’.

We would recommend it for use as a display piece or treasure box.
