Antique Chinese Green Glazed Shiwan Pottery Ginger Jar

Antique Chinese Green Glazed Shiwan Pottery Ginger Jar

$200.00Price

This color-shifting stoneware piece is believed to be a late 1800s-early 1900s vase from the time of the Qing dynasty. Similar ones online were identified as Shiwan pottery from Guangdong Province which often featured colored two tone glazes (ours changes from green to an aqua green-blue depending on the light) and unglazed parts as if incomplete (ours has glaze that does not quite cover the squat jar or its lid).

The lid pattern is referred to as a ‘seal design’. It is not evenly cut but its dropped ‘stopper’ inside keeps it firmly in place. The glaze has a very fine crackling as shown in photos. There are intentional ‘splashes’ of blue on the lower portion of the jar, as shown in photos, and the appearance of something like a belt around the middle. There is some darker glaze around the neck and on one side of the jar. The bottom is unglazed with one small chip (possibly a natural imperfection) as is the inside of the lid. The mouth and bowl appear to have some spillover of glaze.

This would most likely have been purchased by the Burr sisters in the 1920s or 1930s when they visited China.

Others online have CHINA written on the bottom and some have character marks. These were found on auction sites and one on etsy asking $371. Ours was priced a bit lower than suggested by an appraiser.
